Seasonal reproduction in the Arabian spiny mouse, Acomys dimidiatus (Rodentia: Muridae) from Saudi Arabia: the role of rainfall and temperature

چکیده
In deserts where unpredictable rainfall arises and a large variation in temperature occurs, this poses severe energetic and water related constraints on reproduction in small mammals and makes the use of photoperiod as cue for reproduction unreliable. In the present study, the gonad morphometrics, gonadal histology and endocrine profiles of the Arabian spiny mouse (Acomys dimidiatus) were studied over 12 consecutive months in a field population from western Saudi Arabia in an attempt to assess the seasonality of reproduction and gain insights into the environmental cues that may trigger reproduction in this species.

Meriones rex (King jird), Meriones libycus (Libyan jird), Acomys dimidiatus (Eastern spiny mouse), Acomys cahirinus (Egyptian spiny mouse), and Dipodillus dasyurus (Wagner's dipodil) are five species of small rodents of the superfamily Muroidea with distributions in Eastern Africa, Egypt, and the desert regions of the Arabian Peninsula. Water is scarce in these regions and may result in relativ...
متن کاملThe Cairo spiny mouse Acomys cahirinus shows a strong affinity to the Mongolian gerbil Meriones unguiculatus.
The classification of the African spiny mice (genus Acomys) within the Muridae family of rodents has been fraught with controversy. Morphological data suggest a close affinity between this group and true old world mice of the genus Mus. However, the combined results of immunological, biochemical, and DNA melting studies suggest that spiny mice should not even be considered as members of the Mur...
متن کاملLiving on the edge: Daily, seasonal and annual body temperature patterns of Arabian oryx in Saudi Arabia
Heterothermy, the ability to allow body temperature (Tb) to fluctuate, has been proposed as an adaptive mechanism that enables large ungulates to cope with the high environmental temperatures and lack of free water experienced in arid environments. By storing heat during the daytime and dissipating it during the night, arid-adapted ungulates may reduce evaporative water loss and conserve water....
متن کاملGenetic Relationships among Four Saudi Arabian Sheep Populations
Four Saudi Arabian indigenous sheep populations including Najdi, Hbsi, Arb, and Naemi were genotyped for 16 microsatellite markers recommended by the food and agriculture organization (FAO). This study aims to provide information on the genetic structure of the breeds analyzed and give indications and proposals for the cross breeding program. All loci were polymorphic in all populations and loc...
